Carol Coates is a 44-year old divorced train dispatcher from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne with two adult sons;
Carol says;
"I have had Rosacea for 22 years, and it wasn’t until recently that I found a cure for my skin.
Until now I have seen suffering almost my whole adult life with this awful condition that has left my face looking red, swollen and with huge red spots. It has undermined my confidence and has caused me a great deal of embarrassment and discomfort over the years.
My Rosacea was originally triggered in my early 20’s when I was pregnant with my son.
It started with a terrible outbreak of acne and just got worse and worse. Eventually my whole nose and chin were covered with red inflamed skin and horrible white pustules which would develop into huge pussy spots that would then burst and leave scabs all over my face.
When I first got Rosacea I had no idea what it was, I thought it was just because I was run down because I was pregnant.
It was only on a visit to my doctor after I had had my second son that the problem was bought to his attention. The doctor asked me what was wrong with my face. He examined my skin and immediately told me it was Rosacea.
He prescribed tetracycline tablets. I immediately got terrible side effects from these tablets. They gave me hideous diarrhoea and if I drank even a drop of alcohol I’d be violently sick.
However I tried to put up with the nasty side effects because the tablets did clear up the Rosacea to begin with. However after a year they stopped working altogether and the redness and spots came back with a vengeance.
My doctor then tried me on another tablet called Minocycline which was another type of Rosacea medication. That worked well for about eight years, although I did also regularly have bad diarrhoea again with this medication and I also had dizziness, but I tried to put up with it for the sake of my skin.
Ever since I developed Rosacea I have not been able to put any beauty products on my face, not even foundation. Cosmetics and beauty creams would make my face flare up. People at work would ask me why my face was so red. I have even had people asking me if I have a drink problem. It’s very embarrassing. The fact is I am more or less T-total. I can’t really drink because of my job and it’s best for my skin too, so I tend to avoid all alcohol. I feel mortified when people tell me I have had a few too many.
But after almost 20 years of being on tablets I was sick of taking them and feeling so ill all the time so I decided to stop. My Rosacea came back with a vengeance, but I was determined to find a solution that was not drugs.
I researched the condition on the internet extensively and found a cream called Zenmed from the US. It worked, but it used to be absolute agony on my skin when I put it on and would sting so badly I could barely stand it. It was also really expensive.
