Scientists have found the first gene that is directly linked to plaque psoriasis.

Mutations in the gene CARD14 lead to the formation of plaque psoriasis, according to new research published in the May edition of The American Journal of Human Genetics.

This important discovery suggests that psoriasis is caused by genetic defects in the skin and not an over active immune system, as was previously thought. The over activity of immune skin cells is likely to be a secondary symptom, according to scientists who discovered the genetic link.
The scientist found that although the genetic link runs in families, confirming the inherited nature of psoriasis, the genetic mutations in the skin can also occur spontaneously without any other inherited links to the skin condition.
This new discovery could lead to medications that can inhibit this specific gene and pave the way for new and effective treatments for psoriasis.
