What Causes Arthritis?

Loading...

Cartilage is a type of tissue in our bodies that covers and protects the ends of long bones at the joints and nerves. A reduction in this tissue can cause some forms of arthritis. Normal wear and tear of the cartilage around the joint causes osteoarthritis. This can develop over many years, or it can be hastened by an injury or infection in the joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an autoimmune response where the immune system attacks the lining of the joint capsule. This lining (synovial membrane) becomes inflamed and swollen. This can lead to a change in the joint’s shape, and potentially erode the cartilage and bone.
