How to Prevent Cold Sores

Loading...

Skin Shop’s Lip Q Liquorice Balm is a natural lip balm targeted for people who are prone to cold sores. This lip balm contains several ingredients that help to prevent and protect the lips from an outbreak including:

Liquorice extract

Research has shown that liquorice weakens the cold sore virus which can lie dormant in the skin between outbreaks.

Glycyrrhizic acid

The lip balm also contains glycyrrhizic acid which targets the genes that maintain the virus by interfering with the production of the proteins that feed the cells. Glycyrrhizic acid has also been found to protect the skin from UV damage, however, we do recommend wearing an SPF on the lips everyday as well as Lip Q.

Lifestyle changes to prevent cold sores

There are a few simple and natural methods to preventing cold sores, or at least to slow down the occurrence of them. These easy lifestyle changes can help reduce cold sores:

Wearing SPF on your lips everyday

Excessive sun exposure can lead to blistered lips which can ultimately lead to cold sores. Sunlight can be a trigger for some peoples cold sores, so wearing an SPF on your lips everyday can be a good precautionary move if you are exposed to the sun frequently.

Diet changes

Certain foods can also trigger cold sores, the most common being spicy foods and acidic fruits as they can sting the lips. When a cold sore scab opens, those types of foods can irritate the area. Some foods to avoid: citrus fruits, tomatoes, fruit juices, fizzy drinks, wine, vinegar and spicy foods.

Maintaining a healthy immune system

It is common to get a cold sore when you are run down, tired, stressed or feeling ill. All these are linked to the immune system. So making sure you sleep well, exercise regularly and have a good diet can, for some people, be enough to reduce the risk of a cold sore outbreak dramatically.
