What Can Cause Eczema?

Loading...

Some recent studies have suggested that a defect in the biological ‘glue’ that bonds skin cells together could be the cause of eczema.

The itchiness from eczema is not caused by the underlying condition, but from the external bacteria that gets into the cracked open skin leading to inflammation and itching.

Eczema is more prevalent in children than adults, with one in four infants suffering from it in the UK. A lot of infant eczema disappears by teenage years.

Genetic eczema can re-emerge in adulthood due to various triggers. This type of eczema is usually only experienced by adults who had eczema as children.

However, a rising type of adult eczema, in particular among adult women, is ‘contact eczema’. This is eczema caused by contact allergies, typically from cosmetics as well as other beauty products, cleaning products, jewellery and environmental irritants.

Eye Eczema is one of the most common forms of adult contact eczema due to the vast amount of eye cosmetics worn daily as well as contact lens solutions and fake eyelashes.

Hay fever is a common trigger for eye eczema. People with allergies are generally more prone to eye allergies, but hay fever often leads to secondary eye eczema. The constant weeping of hay fever eyes and the swelling from the eye allergy causes the skin around the eyes to become very dry and itchy.
